Rape Crisis Center
What is the Rape Crisis Center?
The Rape Crisis Center can assist and advocate for survivors of sexual assault.Our services include:
- 24/7 Community Crisis Line. You can talk to an advocate 24 hours a day.
- Emergency Shelter if you have no safe place.
- Counseling and Advocacy for survivors and/or their family members. You have the right to have an advocate present for medical examinations and/or law enforcement interviews. We can advocate for you whether or not you decide to file a report with law enforcement. We can also assist you in obtaining a restraining order against the perpetrator. Your Lake FRC advocate can attend the court hearing with you
- Weekly support groups made up of other survivors are facilitated by certified advocates.
- Long term therapy is available with a licensed therapist.
If you are raped:
- Get to a safe place if possible.
- Call Police, 911, or the Rape Crisis Center at 1-888-485-7733.
- Don't change your clothing.
- Don't shower, douche, smoke, rinse you mouth, or apply medication. If possible, do not urinate or move your bowels. If you must, do not use tissue; it removes evidence.
- Don't wash or destroy any bedding, linens, or clothing.
- Don't disturb anything at the crime scene.
- Try to remember anything you can about the attacker and write it down.
- Get medical attention as soon as possible.
Some facts-
According to 2000 Crime Clock calculations, there is one forcible rape every 54 minutes in the state of California and one forcible rape every 6 minutes nationwide.¹
In California, there were 9,785 forcible rapes in 2000. 83.8% were completed rapes, and 16.2% were attempted rapes.²
Overall crime figures for the state of California from January to December 2000 show a 9.7% increase in the number of reported rapes when compared to 1999. ³
Rape and other forms of sexual assault are power, not sex. They are ways of gaining power and control over another person.
Rape (or sexual assault) is an act of violence using sex to hurt, humiliate, degrade and control. It is a violent, brutal, terrifying experience.
