DID YOU KNOW?
- One third of the homicides in the country are Domestic Violence related.
- Domestic Violence isn't just hitting, or fighting, or an occasional mean argument. It's a chronic abuse of power.
- Children who are exposed to violence in the home experience impaired brain development.
- Children who learn violence at home are at risk to continue the violence in their relationships, either as batterers or as victims.
- Every 8 seconds someone is battered in the United States.
- Abused persons and perpetrators can be either sex, and relationships can be opposite-sex or same sex.
If you get battered:
- Get to a safe place if possible.
- Call the police, 911 or the Lake Family Resource Center Community Crisis Line at 1-888-485-7733.
- Don't change your clothing.
- Don't shower or apply medication to wounds, if any.
- Don't wash or destroy clothing you were wearing.
- Don't disturb anything at the crime scene.
- Obtain a temporary restraining order against the batterer.
If you are living with domestic violence:
- Remember that this is not your fault and deserve to live a life free of violence.
- Learn to recognize the growing potential of violence in your partner.
- Notify a trusted neighbor to be alert to strange noises and to call the police when this happens.
- If it is safely possible, get rid of all weapons in your home.
- Create an escape plan for yourself.
